Exchanging Ideas in Peru
SERRV staff recently visited artisan partners in Peru who create products for the LWR Handcraft Project. One artisan
with whom they spent time was Maurelio Huaraca, a gifted ceramic artist and leader of a small workshop in Lurin , Peru
. Huaraca works in the Ayacucho tradition, using skills he inherited from his father. Together, they brainstormed new
ways for him to use his techniques in molding and hand-building, to create functional products featuring natural-pigment,
low-fire glazes.
"Maurelio is well known for his beautiful and intricate nativities," SERRV staff member Matt Johnson said. "Our hope is
that the ideas generated in this visit will bring orders to help sustain work for Maurelio's workshop, after orders for
nativities have been fulfilled. It was a real treat to get my hands a bit dirty, exchanging ideas and working side-by-side
with a master craftsman."
