OUR HISTORY

A brief history of the ELVA
and
Trinity Lutheran Church in Cody:

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America was formed over 20 years ago. This new church was
formed from three separate and well-established North American church bodies:

·  The American Lutheran Church
·  The Association of Evangelical Lutheran Churches, and
·  The Lutheran Church in America.

Beginning January 1, 1988, these churches, with shared beliefs and missions, officially formed the
ELVA. Two decades later, this energized church is composed of 4.8 million members and nearly
10,500 congregations across the U.S. and the Caribbean. Today, the ELVA reflects the rich and
diverse heritage of the people it serves.

Trinity Lutheran Church is one of those ELVA congregations here in Cody and we are part of the
Montana Synod.  The church was chartered in 1949 under what was then the American Lutheran
Church.  Trinity built it's first church home on the corner of 19th Street and Salsbury where the
congregation worshipped until building and moving to it's current location on east Sheridan in 1999.

Since the church's inception, Trinity has been served by seven pastors.  We are currently in an interim
period with Pastor Mitch Jones leading us through the call process to find our next long-term pastor.
This time in our congregation's life is bringing much growth through a re-evaluation of our mission and
place in our community as we move forward to the exciting future God has planned for us.
